A second maritime career · U.S. Navy veterans

YOU BET I'M
GOING BACK TO SEA!

You served your country at sea. Your experience may still open doors. Explore civilian merchant marine opportunities, understand what your military service may count toward, and find your next qualification, one step at a time.

For retired and separating Navy officers and enlisted veterans. Proudly respectful of Navy service. Independent education, not a government credentialing service.

Your service has value

From U.S. Navy watchstander to civilian mariner

You already know shipboard teamwork, responsibility and the realities of being at sea. Depending on your duties and documented service, the Coast Guard may credit some of that experience toward a U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential. No civilian rank or license is automatically granted on the basis of Navy rank.

For enlisted veterans

Skills and watchstanding matter

Deck and Engine ratings, including AB, QMED or appropriate watchkeeping endorsements, may be worth investigating. Qualified mariners can also progress toward certain officer credentials by approved routes.

What did you do in the Navy?

Choose the broad area closest to your actual work, then select what kind of civilian job interests you. This guide suggests what to investigate, only the USCG determines eligibility.

Your starting point

Navigation, seamanship, deck watches

Obtain duty and watchstanding records; investigate Deck national/STCW checklists.

Credentials to investigate (not eligibility):
  • AB or RFPNW when appropriate
  • National Deck Officer endorsement
  • STCW Deck endorsement for applicable seagoing jobs

Your interest: Check international STCW, security, medical and voyage-specific requirements after confirming the national route.

Review current NMC Military to Mariner information and endorsement checklists. Your military rating, Navy rank and command assignments do not automatically convert to a USCG credential.

Straightforward actions

Eight steps toward civilian employment

You do not have to pay for everything at once. Start by confirming military service credit and the exact credential you want. Then budget for your next required step.

  1. 1

    Find the right civilian job

Choose Deck, Engine, Steward or small-vessel work. Civilian officer/rating titles are not automatic translations of Navy rank.

  2. 2

    Collect your military evidence

Gather History of Assignments (HOA), Transcript of Sea Service where available, vessel/duty records, dates assigned, tonnage/displacement, propulsion power, waters, watch qualifications and training certificates. A DD-214 by itself does not prove required sea service.

  3. 3

    Request the right endorsement checklist

Read current Coast Guard national endorsement and (if relevant) STCW requirements. Look at Deck, Engine, AB, QMED, officer, OUPV or Master pathways suited to your goals.

  4. 4

    Budget in stages

Check whether you already have accepted training credits; evaluate GI Bill benefits if eligible; current active duty fee exemptions normally do not apply after retirement. Take only needed training.

  5. 5

    Obtain required documents

Apply for TWIC, medical certification and drug testing where applicable; complete current forms and assemble evidence. Medical applications follow their own NMC process.

  6. 6

    Submit through today’s USCG process

Follow current NMC application portal directions, not old MARAD text saying every application must be physically delivered to an REC. Ask NMC about military service credit if unclear.

  7. 7

Prepare for exam / assessments if required

USCG will issue the appropriate notice, such as Approval to Test, or seek additional documentation. Use free official samples first; approved courses may satisfy particular requirements.

  8. 8

    Explore employers and working life

Compare actual contracts: vessel, work cycle, benefits, overtime, travel, union arrangement, compensation when ashore, and time away from family.

Important: The older MARAD overview still contains instructions about handing applications to Regional Examination Centers. The current NMC online MMC application instructions control. Medical-certification submissions use their own separate process.

Training can be done in stages

STCW is the international standards framework, not one license that everybody must buy. Some Navy training may receive credit; confirm with NMC. If new classes are required, choose a USCG-approved school and course, and take them when needed for the specific credential or job.

Civilian employment · 2025 national figures

What might a maritime career pay?

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a May 2025 national median annual wage of $71,860 for the broad Water Transportation Workers occupation. It describes all workers in the occupation, not Navy veterans specifically, and is not a starting-salary offer. Suboccupation figures should be taken from the applicable current BLS OEWS table before publication.

$71,860May 2025 U.S. median for water transportation workers

Official sources: BLS, Water Transportation Workers, 2025 medians ↗ · BLS projects approximately 8,600 water transportation worker openings per year, on average, in 2025 to 2035.

Could I work about half the year?

Some jobs offer extended rotations ashore; others do not. Compare a hypothetical 180-day work pattern with any offered yearly compensation.

*A mathematical comparison, not an actual contract day-rate. This does not mean days ashore are paid leave. No tax, overtime, insurance, retirement, training, travel or contract deductions are assumed. Shipboard service may involve seven-day workweeks and long hours.

Can my Navy service count toward a civilian USCG credential?

Yes, certain qualifying military sea service and training may be credited after NMC evaluation. Records must show the specific ship, dates, duties and technical details. Neither rank nor years in uniform automatically produces an equivalent merchant credential.

Does a retired Navy officer automatically become a merchant marine officer?

No. A Navy commission is not automatically a national Merchant Mariner officer endorsement. Depending on qualifying service, education, training, tonnage/power, assessments and exams, you may be eligible to apply for an appropriate deck or engineering endorsement.

Can enlisted Navy personnel qualify for AB, QMED or later become officers?

Potentially. NMC reviews actual sea service and duties. Enlisted veterans can investigate AB, QMED or an officer track where they meet the specific standards; military ratings are not guaranteed equivalencies.

What documents should I request before leaving the Navy?

Get a History of Assignments and any sea-service transcript or acceptable equivalent, watch/duty qualifications, training certificates and ship details. Save records of dates aboard, ratings or billets, vessels, tonnage and power. DD-214 alone is insufficient sea-service evidence.

How does the Coast Guard calculate Navy sea service?

USCG guidance explains how documented military service is credited; an agency guidance document describes a normal 60% calculation for certain post-2019 applications, subject to applicable rules, role and historical exceptions. Do not count every Navy assignment day as a merchant sea-service day.

Will service from years ago still count?

Recency requirements can affect eligibility. The NMC military-credit guidance describes special recency rules; use the current endorsement checklist and request individual evaluation rather than assuming old service is invalid or automatically enough.

Does Navy recruit training automatically satisfy STCW Basic Training?

No blanket credit should be promised. MARAD notes possible recognition of prior military training, but the Coast Guard decides which documented components meet today’s requirements and which gaps remain. Get an NMC/approved-course determination before paying for retraining.

What is STCW, and does every job require it?

STCW is a separate international certification framework that applies to specified seagoing duties. Not every entry-level job or domestic small-vessel position requires the same STCW qualifications. Check the intended credential, vessel and operation.

Can I take required classes myself without going through SIU?

Yes. Independent enrollment in Coast Guard-approved courses is possible; union membership is not a Coast Guard licensing or testing requirement. Unions and apprenticeships may nevertheless offer training, employment and benefits.

Can GI Bill benefits help with exam or prep costs?

Eligible veterans may obtain reimbursement for qualifying approved licensing/certification examinations (up to $2,000 per test under VA rules). Certain prep courses may qualify under specific GI Bill chapters; verify the approved test or course, remaining benefits, and VA procedures first.

How much might I earn as a civilian mariner?

For May 2025 the BLS national median annual wage was $71,860 for the broad Water Transportation Workers occupation. This is an occupational median, not a guaranteed Navy-veteran salary or starting offer. Verify any sailor, captain/mate/pilot, or ship-engineer suboccupation figures against the current BLS OEWS table before publishing.

Could I work about six months per year?

Some maritime roles offer multi-week or multi-month rotations and extended periods ashore; others return home daily. A 180-day example is only a scheduling illustration. Time off is not automatically paid vacation; get the full employer contract.

Is the Merchant Marine part of the Navy?

No. Most merchant marine work is civilian commercial work with separate operators and wage arrangements. The merchant marine can support national defense, but working in it is not the same as serving on active-duty Navy orders.

I served in logistics or communications. Is there a maritime path for me?

Yes, a wide range of shipboard civilian departments exist. However, a support specialty is not automatic Deck or Engine sea-service credit. Match actual service and training to a real endorsement checklist.
