Motor · Steam · Gas Turbine

Your National Maritime Center evaluation and Approved to Test letter determine your actual examination. Your selected study pathway does not replace those requirements.

Management-level engineering · Propulsion and auxiliary plants · Electricity, electronics and control engineering · Engineering safety and environmental protection

From rating study to officer preparation

Already studying as a Qualified Member of the Engine Department? Explore officer-level practice separately from your rating studies. Selecting a study pathway does not establish eligibility for an officer credential.

Prepare for engineering responsibility, not just a new rank

The National Maritime Center First Assistant Engineer subject outline includes general engineering, plant-specific subjects, engineering safety and electrical and control engineering. Its management-level topics include maintenance systems, operational planning, inspections and troubleshooting.

Choose the propulsion pathway that matches your evaluation. Do not combine Steam, Motor and Gas Turbine requirements just because all three study options are available.

  1. Set the correct examination and propulsion pathway

Select First Assistant Engineer and your evaluated Motor, Steam or Gas Turbine pathway in the test builder. Confirm the required subjects before starting.

  2. Connect systems to management decisions

Link machinery principles with maintenance planning, inspections, safe operation and casualty response. Use the free salinity and heat-transfer examples to practice explaining a result instead of memorizing a letter.

  3. Practise calculations and diagnosis deliberately

Work through the stated numbers and units. In Study mode, use a published Why when available; use Real Test mode separately for a no-hints rehearsal.

Is this an official United States Coast Guard service?

No. Mariner Notebook is an independent examination-preparation and professional-record platform. Official examination and eligibility requirements remain with the United States Coast Guard and National Maritime Center.

What is free, and what requires Academy Pro?

Guest officer study is limited to 15 questions per session and 60 active minutes per day. Selected public lessons and teaching examples remain free. Full officer pools and the complete Academy lesson and flashcard library require paid or sponsored Academy Pro access. Artificial Intelligence credits are separate.

How are Current and archived questions different?

Current practice follows the selected official subjects. Legacy and Historical questions are separately identified additional practice; they are not silently substituted for Current official modules.
